Port Edward Accommodation, South AfricaAt the southernmost tip of Kwazulu Natal lies Port Edward. The beaches at Port Edward is protected by shark nets. Lifeguards are always on duty during holiday periods. The beaches offer excellent opportunities for surfing, waterskiing, jet-skiing, and fishing from the rocks or deep sea). There are also a number of dams in the area where visitors can try their hand at bass fishing. The wreck of the Nightingale (or what is left of it) offers scuba divers something to explore. June and July is a great time to visit Port Edward to watch the dolphins play or see a passing whale. This is also (roughly) the time of the annual sardine run ("The Greatest Shoal on Earth”). If you are into bird watching, you might want to visit the Umtamvuma Nature Reserve a few kilometres outside Port Edward. This nature reserve is home to a colony of Cape Vultures and 80 other species of birds. Other animals in this reserve includes: black backed jackal, troops of baboons, the large spotted genet, several species of buck, samango monkeys and leopard. Port Edward claims to have the smallest desert in the world, called the "Red Desert". The area lies a few kilometres west of the town and measures only 11 hectares. It looks like a miniature version of the Arizona desert with man-high hills and valleys from naked red soil. Early, Middle and Late Stone Age artifacts have been discovered on both the Upper and Lower Red Desert, and various archeological studies have been conducted there. Other attractions in Port Edward include the North Sand Bluff Lighthouse, which visitors can climb up and enjoy the view from the top. Visitors can take a relaxing cruise on a boat up the Umtamvuna River, or experience the tranquillity of the region on scenic horse rides along the beach. The Wild Coast Sun Casino is close enough for a night out. Four golf courses will keep golfers on the greens - Wild Coast Country Club, Port Edward, San Lameer Country Club and Southbroom Golf Club (rated in the top 50 golf courses in South Africa).
