Pongola  is wedged between the Pongola River and Swaziland in Kwazulu Natal. This town has its own sugar mill and serves as a commercial centre for the sugarcane and sub tropical fruit farmers in the region.

Pongola has access to the N2 and offers easy access to attractions of northern Zululand and The Kingdom of Swaziland. Just east of the town lies the Pongolapoort Dam – a tiger fishing tournament is held here in October. Also close to Pongola is the Mkuze Game, Ndume Game Reserve, The Tembe Elephant Reserve, the Kosi Bay Resort and smaller game farms.
